Since 1988, Whetstone Productions has provided a full range of news and documentary film production as well as consulting services to clients across the United States and around the world.  Our purpose is to facilitate a better understanding of the times in which we live.
In January 2008 Whetstone Productions began a documentary film-training program for professionals at Jordan Television in Amman.  John Schwally is production supervisor (http://www.jfsfilms.com/prJORDAN.htm).  Faculty includes Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Kirsten Johnson, Wellington Bowles, cameraperson and sound engineer, and Oscar-nominated editor Sam Pollard (“Four Little Girls,” 1997, Spike Lee) leading editing master classes.  The team will produce a half-hour documentary film on the impact of USAID programs in Jordan over 50 years, including medical clinics, water resource projects, and women’s’ empowerment programs.

In July 2008, Whetstone Productions launches a documentary film initiative in Dubai.  “Documentary Voices: Pulling Focus” brings American, Arab, and Iranian filmmakers together for screenings and networking sessions at Dubai’s Knowledge Village, July 4-8, 2008.  Anisa Mehdi is project Artistic Director. www.documentaryvoices.com.  In its inaugural year, Documentary Voices hopes to inspire filmmakers from these diverse cultures to generate out-of-the-box ideas for communicating about one another to audiences back home.

The US Department of State’s International Information Programs will rollout a new Whetstone Productions series during Ramadan 2008 (September).  “American Ramadan” features Muslims fasting and meeting the ongoing demands of work and family during Ramadan.

“Monks and Muslims: Finding Faith in Algeria” is our current film in production.  60% of the videotaping is complete.  Retired Catholic Cardinal Theodore McCarrick has sent a personal check for $1000 to support this film’s completion.   The William and Mary Greve Foundation is holding $65,000 in matching funds for the project.  A DVD describing the film is available on request at whetstoneproductions@anisamehdi.com.

Anisa Mehdi’s first short feature will soon be complete.  “Mozart in Maine” was shot on location on Whetstone Pond and on the Appalachian Trail near Monson, Maine.  This film is produced with the support of family and friends.

Whetstone Productions will usher your news, documentary and video production project from conception to completion.  Our services include concept design, pre-production, scripting, location and studio shoots, editing and full post-production.  Clients are consulted throughout the process, assuring that the final product more than meets expectations.  We also provide talent for interviews and voice-overs in English, Spanish, Arabic and French.  We can do your entire job or just a section of it.  Whetstone Productions enjoys teaming with other, highly skilled professionals on broadcast and non-broadcast projects.

We've produced a broad range of films and videos, from a documentary on "Pneumatic Fracturing Extraction," a state-of-the-art environmental remediation technology, to reports on religious persecution around the world; from how a sewage treatment plant works to the 1996 Senate race in New Jersey and an examination of Hollywood stereotypes of Arabs and Muslims for ABC News Nightline.

Whetstone Productions was founded by its president, Anisa Mehdi, who has over 20 years experience in mainstream American media.  She specializes in arts and religion and is a recognized authority in Islam and covering Islam.  She holds numerous awards in broadcast journalism and has worked at CBS News, ABC News, National Geographic Television and Film, and United Methodist Communications.  Ms. Mehdi is executive producer for all Whetstone Productions projects and brings specialists to her teams.  Personnel for each project are tailored from an international talent pool.

Our consulting services include developing programs and workshops on Islam, Islam and the Media, Religion and the Arts, and in guiding journalists through the challenges of covering Islam in a post-9/11 world.
